Butler Rose are proud to partner with a progressive and national networked firm, offering an exciting and varied Payroll/Accounts & HR Administrator opportunity for an experienced individual, possessing Payroll/Accounts (with HR or interest in HR) to join a busy finance team based in the Lancaster area.

This position is working within an established team responsible for running full end to end high volume payrolls via Sage both weekly and monthly. The successful candidate should possess full end to end payroll processing expertise within a similar payroll position, processing multiple payrolls. This exciting opportunity, offers real variety to undertake both payroll and accounts and/or some HR duties! Therefore candidates with both payroll, accounts and HR knowledge or interest in HR are welcomed to apply for this position.

This is a role will for someone who is keen to have more scope, personal development and variety in their career to move away from a pure payroll processing role. As the payroll is becoming fully automated, this will allow additional scope for accounts and HR focus, training and development which can be tailored to suit the successful candidate.

Role Responsibilities

  • Working iindependently as part of a small team responsible for accurate processing of high volume payrolls consisting of c100-350 employees via SAGE both weekly and monthly
  • Processing statutory payments, SMP/SSP
  • Auto enrolment pension payments to various pension providers
  • Dealing with payroll queries
  • Process PAYE, NI and RTI submissions
  • Process starters/leavers P45/P46
  • Liaison with the HMRC
  • Accounts duties including Sales Ledger, Purchase Ledger, Bookkeeping etc
  • HR duties (desirable not essential)
  • Enter hours, expenses, mileage claims and maintain payroll pay scales such that all payments are completed accurately and on-time.
  • Complete relevant HMRC paperwork returns and ensure submitted within deadlines.
  • Maintain nominal coding in automated interfaces from Sage Payroll into Sage 200
  • Enter Expenses/Mileage onto the VAT register
  • Participate in any projects to develop the payroll processes and database, taking a lead on identifying improvements and playing a key role in implementing any resultant changes
  • To keep abreast with the developments in Payroll rules and regulations and to contribute to their implementation within the office
  • Perform 6 monthly audit of expenses
  • Month End
  • Ensure smooth closing of all weekly payroll ledgers
  • Monthly reconciliation of all payroll control accounts in line with Management Accounts Reporting Timetable
  • Ensure all deductions from wages are paid across to relevant bodies on time such as Pension, Court Orders, CSA, Unions, etc.
  • Reconcile holiday records between payroll and rosters.


Person Specification

  • Ideally knowledge of SAGE payroll software
  • Previous expertise within a similar full end to end payroll role.
  • Knowledge of accounts i.e. sales ledger/purchase ledger/bookkeeping etc
  • HR experience is desirable but not essential
  • Excellent organisation skills, able to time manage and prioritise
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal to deal with internal and external contacts at all levels
  • Patience, friendly and personable, attention to detail.
