Leeds City Council is looking for a skilled and experienced Child Protection Chair to join their safeguarding team on an initial 6-week contract. This is a critical role responsible for chairing Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences and ensuring that effective multi-agency safeguarding plans are in place and progressed.
Key Responsibilities:
Chair Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences in accordance with statutory guidance, legislation, and local procedures
Ensure and promote high-quality multi-agency practice for children and young people most at risk
Provide independent scrutiny of operational safeguarding and planning activities
Offer expert advice and consultation to Social Workers managing complex child protection cases
Monitor child protection plans to ensure they are appropriate, timely, and do not drift
Required Skills and Experience:
Strong knowledge of legislation and statutory guidance relevant to children's services (e.g., Working Together to Safeguard Children)
Extensive experience in child protection, risk assessment, and social work methodologies
Sound understanding of child development, safeguarding practice, and the socio-economic factors affecting families
Confident in writing coherent, analytical, and grammatically correct reports
Ability to work independently, manage pressure, and make well-evidenced decisions in complex cases
Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to challenge and influence practice constructively
A clear commitment to equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice
Qualifications:
Social Work qualification (Degree in Social Work, DipSW or equivalent)
Registered with Social Work England
Extensive post-qualifying experience within Child Protection services
Prior experience of working as a Child Protection Chair is essential
