Job objectives and responsibilities

· To proactively deliver, design, as necessary, and promote Skills for Life courses, including on-line learning and assessment processes to meet the needs of the residents and contractual requirements and give residents the opportunity to gain external qualifications.

· Work together with the tutor group, maintain standards of delivery and assessment.

· To provide a safe, secure, stimulating, supportive and productive environment for residents that encourages them to attend and enables them to learn and develop skills.

Main duties and accountabilities

· Actively deliver and develop Skills for Life (ESOL - Literacy and/or Maths - Numeracy) courses throughout the Centre, as part of the Preparation for Release and the Integration & Employment education programme, to ensure residents can achieve and there is optimal uptake.

· Assess the literacy and/or numeracy level of learners who attend the classroom(s) ensuring that they can be enrolled in the courses available, making adaptations wherever possible to overcome barriers to learning, progress and achievement.

· Develop and deliver core modular courses for Foundational Skills and Skills for Life in Numeracy and/or Literacy.

· Deliver and/or provide learning opportunities in intermediate to advanced teaching modules, courses and accreditations.

· Adhere to and expand the learning programme while supporting and encouraging all learners with relevant and interesting teaching.

· Support and liaise with the Education Manager, and other Regimes, EDI Managers in the department, external providers and the Regimes and Education teams to understand what is and can be done to promote your area, maximise attendance and uptake of services offered.

· Work with external providers and the Regimes and Education team to support events as required.

· Ensure the completion of all documentation and administration in line with company policies and any external agency requirements so that accurate, compliant data is maintained and provided.

· Use all resources effectively to ensure quality of service and value for money.

· Monitor attendance and seek resident feedback to continuously improve and maximise uptake.

· Create and maintain a safe, secure, positive and friendly learning environment where residents feel welcomed and respected.

· Monitor attendance, retention and achievement figures and assist in the development of strategies and procedures and make improvements to maximise these.

· Manage the learning environment always ensuring maintenance and security of tools and equipment to relevant standards.

· Undertake further duties to support the Regimes department and the delivery of relevant vocational courses as required.

Person Specification

· An appropriate qualification in the subject is required: (e.g. English, TESOL, TEFL, Mathematics, Functional Skills)

· Appropriate teaching experience and qualification in delivering functional skills is preferred.

· Experience within the custodial setting would be advantageous.

· A good working knowledge of ICT is required.
