We have an exciting opportunity for a career-minded person to join our Mill Green (Hatfield) team as an Electrical and Mechanical Technician. 

Focused mainly on electrical maintenance, you will be required to perform a range of assigned front-line maintenance/operational activities on our sewage pumping stations in the Hertfordshire area.

Working in multi-disciplinary teams that are responsible for carrying out scheduled, unscheduled and emergency maintenance work on mechanical and electrical equipment.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to Thames Water's environmental impact and you will be actively helping to reduce pollution from our sites and networks.

What you’ll be doing as an Electrical and Mechanical Technician

  • Investigate plant failures and perform repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and performing repairs during incidents.
  • Installing, modifying, and commissioning new plant equipment and diagnosing and repairing faults in systems and plants.
  • Provide technical advice, refer to up-to-date technical knowledge, and provide training or support for technical trainees if required.
  • Examples of equipment that you will be working on include motors, gearboxes, screw /chain conveyors & centrifuges, various pumps, and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSD, automatic valves, flow, level and pressure measurement, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
  • Always working safely and complying with all Health and Safety guidance and procedures.
  • Base Location - Mill Green (Hatfield), AL9 5PE.
  • 38 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 3:36 pm. Plus, you will be included on a 1 week in every 6 weeks out-of-hours emergency standby rota, for which you receive additional payments.

What you should bring to the role

  • You should be a time-served apprentice with significant experience in electrical systems working in a “true multi-skilled” capacity. Previous experience in an electrical apprenticeship.
  • Experience in maintaining, testing, installing and fault diagnosis on electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently.
  • An ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ or C&G level 3 in mechanical engineering is desirable.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues are crucial.
  • The work requires you to work in confined spaces with the successful completion of appropriate training.
  • You will require a valid driving licence.

  • Be a self-motivated individual who can immerse themselves into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined, have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can-do attitude. This role can be demanding at times, but very rewarding too.
  • Take Ownership of responding quickly to faults, being curious to understand the problem fully, and identifying the best solution to resolve it the first time.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the team.
  • Teamwork – We are one team, and our end goals are the same.
  • Proactive – take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site and communicate effectively.
  • Must be prepared to be trained in safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety standards.

  • Offering base salary up to £40,000 per annum, plus standby & overtime opportunities. Increasing earnings by a potential £8,000 - £10,000.
