To assist the master, in a professional, effective and economical manner to Flag State and Class Standards. The OOW is responsible for keeping a safe look out when he is on watch with due regard to the International Regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea (COLREGS). The OOW, will be responsible for the supervision of the vessel crew while on tasks and will oversee all tasks on deck. The successful candidate will work with the deck when required and assist the master on the bridge. You will be responsible for Stock control of deck equipment held by the vessel. A key part of your role will be to assist with risk assessments and COSHH registers. You will receive all Company procedures, policies, temporary instructions and communicate to crew. It is essential that you ensure all records kept onboard are kept up to date.
This opportunity allows you to join a fantastic team and deliver our essential services. The working rotation is as follows: you will work a 3 week back to back system (3 weeks on 3 weeks off, no annual leave) week one, starts 19:00 on a Friday, working the core working days if required and on 2 hours call back, week 2, starts at 19:00 on the following Friday, work the core working day and on 8 hours call back, week 3 starts 11:00 hours the following Friday, you are required to live on the tug and be ready at 15 mins notice. For your on call weeks you will have to have your own accommodation. After a 2 year period you rotate in the harbour section and work Mon - Fri with 6 weeks annual leave.
What you need to do the job:

The mates position is Portsmouth based, providing water front services to the royal navy, and visiting foreign ships. The MOD are the prime customer but we will undertake commercial work as required. We operate 29 hull's. The mates position will be in the tug section this is made up of 6 Damen built tugs ranging from an 80 ton bollard pull rotor tug to a 26 ton bollard pull ASD.
