Job Description

Responsible for creating and writing various types of user documentation, including how-to guides, references, manuals, cheat sheets or instructions in a way that is easily read and understood by the end user. The technical author/writer/communicator will serve as part of a team conducting studies and will be expected to help improve the documentation held across the project and author the reports for independently following Investigations. Their key role will be to ensure that high quality technical outputs are fed into the formal Dstl review process. This will support the delivery of consistent outputs of high technical quality. The specific skills of the author selected will influence their workload on the core tasks for which they have been allocated. They should also be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, create work schedules and basically manage their time effectively. As a Technical Author your main responsibilities would be: Explain scientific and technical ideas in simple language. Meet with customer representatives (primarily Dstl Scientists & Engineers) to establish technical specifications; this may also include Ministry of Defence and Other Government Department Users, Customers and Stakeholders. Study drawings, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples. Create user and technical documentation for a variety of material, including how-to guides and instruction manuals. Ensure technical verbiage is easy to understand by the layperson. Gather information on their subjects in libraries and on the web. Prepare charts, graphs, or forms to support and improve draft reports. Ensure technical reports flow in the correct sequence. Create table of contents and cite sources. Gather usability feedback from customers. Follow Dstl policies and procedures as well as MoD JSPs. You'll have relevant experience in: Previous similar work. Mentoring skills. Broader supporting skills, i.e. communications skills. Experience of working in Government or MoD (desirable). Write clear and concise policies and procedures. Edit industrial publications.
