cheme begins: September 2020

Location: London

London Underground plays an essential role in our city’s development. Our network covers 253 miles, serving 275 stations and carriers more than five million passengers per day.

The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network. The technological advancements we are seeing in our signalling  and operating infrastructure mean that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You’ll be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.

What will I be doing?

Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff through various placements across the organisation so as to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge through a hands-on approach to learning.

London Underground’s network covers a vast area from zones 1-9 and 11 different lines. With many interchanges and pressure on our network to be constantly “on”, ensuring our lines are running safely and to capacity is the responsibility of our signalling engineers.

Advancements in technology are making this role increasingly interesting, you’ll be working on one of the world’s oldest transport networks rolling out the most advanced technology, a truly unique opportunity. You may choose to specialise in design, construction or maintenance as your careers progresses. What do we look for?

Our talented apprentices form a vital part of that vision, so it’s important that we find the best people to help us do this. We’re looking for people who are;

Analytical and logical thinkers
Continuing learners
Creative and innovative

As a member of the team, we’ll give you responsibility and the opportunity to add value.  If you’re excited by inspiring and influencing the future of London then this is the career path for you.

Where can this career take me?

This apprenticeship is just the start of your career, the roles and opportunities available to you are endless. Many of our apprentices progress after a number of years into Managerial positions.  Alternatively, you may want to remain as a hands-on engineer, growing in knowledge and experience and passing on your skills to the next generation of Apprentices.

The current Director of Engineering and Managing Director for London Underground for TfL both started as technician apprentices so it can be seen that the apprentices can aspire eventually to senior management positions.

What will you be employed to do once you have completed the apprenticeship?

You’ll be employed as a Technical Officer in the Signals department working in either a maintenance depot or installation / works depot.

The maintenance depots undertake scheduled routine maintenance of all the signalling equipment on a defined area which could include track circuits, points, signals and cable networks. This maintenance will entail fully testing any equipment being maintained or replaced to specific LU standards. The maintenance department also usually undertake the routine change of life expired equipment and carry out fault finding and repairs on failing equipment that may also involve the change of affected equipment.

The installation/ works depots generally support track renewals and upgrade work. This will normally involve disconnecting signalling equipment from infrastructure to facilitate other departments to carry out their own work. Once this work has been completed you will be required to reconnect all previously removed equipment and fully test out the signalling system to ensure it is safe to return the system to operational use. You may also be asked to support the local maintenance depot with scheduled routine maintenance of signalling equipment on a defined area which could include track circuits, points, signals and cable networks.

What training and support will you get?

You’ll have an Apprenticeship Development Manager who will act as your line manager and be responsible for ensuring that the design and delivery of the Apprenticeship is fit for purpose. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You’ll also have a mentor that’ll support and guide you sharing their knowledge and expertise.

You’ll also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.
