Environmental Monitoring for Health Protection (EMHP) is a JBC-led Programme whose primary responsibility is the delivery of Covid-19 Wastewater Monitoring. We play a key role in Test & Trace and in delivering government's roadmap out of lockdown. We routinely analyse wastewater from approx. 550 locations across England for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. This provides crucial information to support local and national outbreak response. The Bioinformatician role is an exciting opportunity to lead the EMHP genomics research portfolio, which sits at the heart of our research delivery. As Genomics Research lead, you will help to set the strategic direction for EMHP Research, as well as contributing at a senior-level on environmental genomics across government. This will work closely with the operational bioinformatics team who are responsible for developing and executing pipelines for analysing whole genome sequencing data from wastewater samples. These data provide a valuable resource for local and national Covid-19 decision-making and are regularly reported to stakeholders. Responsibilities of the Bioinformatician + Lead a small team of, with line management responsibility of 1-3 people. + Deliver a programme of research to support continuous improvement to ensure consistent and continued development of analysis pipelines and visualisation tools. + Represent the wider team and Senior Leadership on cross-government technical groups relating to SARS-CoV-2 variants and incorporate the latest clinical developments into wastewater analysis pipelines. + Foster a collaborative working relationship with equivalent groups across government and academia working on Covid-19 genomics. + Support the design and delivery of a broad range relevant research projects delivered internally and externally, including for wastewater genomic applications beyond Covid-19. Leading the generation of research outputs such as peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. + Liaising with reporting, data analytics and wider science team to identify research needs and integrate research outcomes Essential Skills of the Bioinformatician

Candidate Description

  • Experience working with genomic and metagenomic data, ideally viruses and environmental samples. You will be confident and experienced leading a team of biostatisticians to deliver analysis in a fast-paced environment. + Experience in a programming language (R / Python/Perl/Kubernetes) and common bioinformatics tools. + Experience communicating science to senior stakeholders and in academic settings such as international conferences. Ideally, you will have experience of using scientific evidence to inform policy development + Experience in developing research, prioritising research and taking it though delivery into publication and integration., + Graduate Degree (PhD/MSc) in a relevant field (Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Life Sciences with computational focus or similar) or equivalent commercial experience.
