Network Engineer

Job Description

This role sits in the Network and IT Security Team within the IT Department of the UKAEA.
The UKAEA site networks cover all the office-based computing, cloud services, operational networks, WiFi & VoIP networks and the connection to the internet allowing remote computer and data access. As well as managing the day to day running of these networks and of the internet connection, the job exists to plan for growth of bandwidth, performance and services to meet users' requirements, and implement suitable solutions.

The job holder will be a member of the Network Team and also work alongside the IT Security Team to assist in ensuring that the network infrastructure is secure.
Accountabilities:


* Consult with clients to specify new system requirements and design solutions
* Resolve issues on office and experiment networks to ensure MAST/JET/Fusion operations are not blocked (faults on the network can have a huge impact on the operation of the MAST/JET experiments and on the users and so need to be resolved rapidly)
* Implement new networks and services for new requirements
* Manage network access controls
* Manage and monitor wired & wireless network infrastructure
* Troubleshoot network related issues
* Test/simulate network related issues and solutions
* Develop and maintain network monitoring system
* Manage the monitoring and documentation of the network hardware to detect capacity issues and propose solutions
* Maintain network performance by performing network monitoring and analysis, and performance tuning; escalate problems to vendor
* Maintain site networks through planned upgrades to improve performance as requirements grow
* Maintain network documentation

Specific Qualifications/Experience:
* A minimum of 5 years' experience (desirable HP/Aruba and Extreme)
* In depth knowledge of current network engineering practices
* In depth knowledge of routing protocols RIP, OSPF
* In depth knowledge of L2 & L3 VPN
* In depth knowledge of L2 protocols
* Experience with large network designs
* Experience with Software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN)
* Experience of wireless network design and management (desirable Ruckus)
* Experience of firewall management (desirable Fortinet and Checkpoint)
* Experience with network automation (desirable scripting)
* Experience with VoIP services
* Experience working to an ISO 9001 accredited management system
* Good understanding of network security
* Good interpersonal and communication skills, plus the ability to work as part of a team
