The position involves co-ordinating and providing legal advice on financial regulatory matters and supporting Santander's corporate investment banking division ("SCIB") in relation to both its Banking and Corporate Finance ("BC&F") and Markets business lines.

More specifically, advising on and working with the business and other stakeholders on compliance with financial regulation impacting the wholesale corporate and investment banking markets.

The successful candidate will support the SCIB business covering a number of businesses and product areas, including but not limited to, providing legal advice on financial regulatory matters impacting the primary sales and trading desks within the Markets franchise in the UK and regulation and legal risk management relating to the M&A and Hedging Advisory businesses in BC&F.

The difference you'll make.

  • Advising SCIB core sales and trading desks within the Markets business and M&A and Hedging advisory businesses within BC&F in the UK on financial regulatory matters and advisory mandates

  • Providing legal advice and managing legal risk on regulatory change programmes and key regulatory initiatives impacting the wholesale corporate and investment banking market

  • Drafting and maintaining the legal documentation required by Banco Santander (London Branch) for compliance with applicable financial regulation and operation of its Markets and M&A and Hedging Advisory business lines in the UK.

  • Working closely with the compliance function in order to interpret and assist in the implementation of regulations affecting the wholesale markets and advisory environment.

  • Advising on and keeping abreast of the wholesale regulatory change agenda and embedding regulatory requirements and processes within the architecture of trading, trading infrastructure & advisory documentation.

Candidate Description

  • The person must be a fully qualified lawyer with either a current Solicitors Practising Certificate for England and Wales or be fully admitted to the English Bar or hold a Scottish or foreign jurisdiction equivalent.

  • Experience advising similar corporate investment banking advisory businesses and/or on wholesale financial regulation (i.e. MIFID II, MIFIR, EMIR, BREXIT)

    It would also be nice for you to have.

  • An agile mind-set and openness to build and develop subject matter expertise in parallel with business needs and growth

  • Experience of UK M&A and the UK Takeover Code

  • Experience of cross border issues, multi-jurisdictional transactions and exposure to interaction of multiple regulatory regimes.

  • Exposure to other forms of wholesale market financial instruments and/or infrastructure.
