A new role of Head of Engineering Productivity (or Chapter Area Lead as we call them in our Agile model) focused on Engineering Productivity is required to accelerate our engineering teams across DLG, enabling them to work to their full potential.

Reporting into our Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for setting and executing broad technical strategy for a team of 30+ engineers, including engineering managers - with the aim of growing the team to 50-60 over the next 12 months. This role will lead on developer platform, tools and frameworks, software development lifecycle (SDLC) and modern engineering practices, and Test Automation and Software Engineering in Test at DLG.

This is a transformational opportunity to drive engineering practices in support of delivering high-quality products, propositions, and services for DLG customers and colleagues, and will have the partnership of an Engineering Community Lead which we're also recruiting for. What does this role involve?

It's a hands-on leadership role with a data-driven engineering team focused on optimising the engineering process so that DLG can deliver amazing products, propositions and service to our customers, faster and safer.

You'll be accountable for leading, managing, and growing a team of engineeriing experts - setting direction for our software delivery lifecycle (SDLC) and building engineering communities and capability around modern engineering practices, particularly test and quality driven.

You'll be responsible for defining and delivering engineering metrics, building tools and infrastructure (cloud native) to support engineering productivity, champion test-driven and quality first engineering practices across all engineering, build the community, career and home for Test Engineers and Software Engineers in Test.

Influencing is key, you will need to build coalitions to deliver improvements to engineering practices with engineering teams across DLG, whilst maintaining delivery and outcome focus. Embracing an Agile operating model, providing expert advice and guidance in developing the engineering strategy, engaging with projects, and ensuring effective engineering, testing and quality practices are defined, adopted, and delivering material improvement in velocity, quality, and engineer happiness.

What You'll Need

We're open to candidates from any industry but would expect customer focus and an interest in the insurance business and its future direction

  • Software engineering experience and experience of transforming and delivering movement and maturity in engineering practices

  • Understanding of agile in principle and practice, including enterprise delivery frameworks such as LeSS or SAFe

  • Practical experience with cloud native development, continuous delivery and test automation. You do not need to be hands-on coding unless you want to, but you must be up-to-date and have a clear and credible view of what a high engineering practices bar looks like and how to get there

  • Ability to apply strategic and innovative thinking to problem-solving

  • Strong views in how engineering can create options and deliver though outcomes supporting growth safely for customers and colleagues

  • End-to-end mindset regarding engineering and software delivery, with particular focus on collaboration, whilst developing and challenging the status quo (and thoughtfully!)

  • Leadership capability aligned to the DLG Behaviours at a senior level (e.g. being curious, empowering teams, being aligned on outcomes, testing/learning/adapting, building trust, and encouraging simplicity)

  • Understanding the need to move to emerging new technologies as developer tooling changes over the next few years

  • Strategic thinker who brings strong, confident thought leadership coupled with commercial pragmatism and a healthy sprinkling of evangelism
