Asda Technology are recruiting for a Development Manager, responsible for the delivery of new applications, and enhancements to existing applications. The role will work with Programme teams across multiple areas of the Asda business as part of the Future Programme which sees Asda separate from Walmart. The role will also have responsibility for George clothing application development. George are currently coming to the completion of a large SAP ERP this year and the successful candidate will need to understand the George technical landscape to deliver application development in future.

You won't have any direct reports, but you'll be responsible for leading teams of third-party developers and working alongside a peer group of other Development Managers. You will work closely with Solution Architects, Project Managers, Functional Consultants and Solution Designers. This is not a hands-on technical role, as development is delivered by our third-party vendors however you will have a technical background to support, influence and quality control their deliverables.

Your Role

  • Involved in the early project activity, providing expert input into Design documentation that drives scope at build item level - eg WRICEF/technical development object list, functional specs

  • Review solution architecture documentation and functional specs to ensure that solutions are fit for purpose from an Application Development point of view

  • Validate the level of effort estimation and duration of Apps Dev activities to provide accurate project estimates to Programme Management

  • Understand and plan tasks required to deliver solutions and identify how these tasks could be split across multiple resources to maximise the speed of delivery

  • Create a Build Plan aligned to the overall Programme Plan, adhering to timelines, cost, resource utilisation, build item dependencies

  • Co-ordinate development and development dependencies across teams, run stand ups

  • Track and report on Build progress, monitor deviations to Plan and mitigate risk with proposed actions to bring back on track

  • Ensure the creation of quality Technical Design Documents by third parties and Technical Unit Testing takes place and results recorded

  • Deliver consistent high-quality code through code review to ensure no issues before hand over

  • Proactively adapt to changes in solution design, timescales, or budget, performing an impact analysis and providing feedback

  • Ensure adherence to all development standards and working practices, review and improve where we can drive agility and reduce cost

Candidate Description

Are you a strong Development Manager who has experience in working with third party development teams on a large-scale development programme? Do you have SAP experience? If so, then we would love to hear from you.,

  • Experience of large scale development with SAP

  • Vendor management

  • Strong experience / background in delivering application solutions in large scale organisations

  • Knowledge and experience of working with large scale business critical integration projects

  • Managing third party development teams - including near shore/offshore

  • Leadership of technically mixed capability teams, providing direction and coaching

  • Managing nearshore and offshore resources

  • Experience using Jira for large scale programmes with multiple teams and projects

  • Experience of SAP, .Net Core, SQL Server and Azure
