Design Office Checker

Job Description

UKAEA is leading the drive to put fusion energy on the grid, to give the world a new form of long-term, sustainable low-carbon electricity. At their sites at Culham, Oxfordshire and Rotherham, South Yorkshire, they have a rapidly growing workforce to fulfil their expanding programme of research, focused on delivering the UK's first fusion prototype power plant by 2040.

To provide CAD checking expertise to UKAEA programmes. Main responsibilities include:

Check 2D drawings and 3D models, ensuring compliance with UKAEA CAD standards and BS8888:2020.

Check the application of tolerancing, including GD&T and tolerance stack.

Check the fit, form and function of designs within the remit of the Design Office.

Liaise with project managers to establish priorities and update progress.

Contribute to the development of UKAEA CAD standards.

Contribute to increasing standards and awareness through mentoring and development.


Minimum HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.

Trained in the application of GD&T and ISO GPS.

Good knowledge of Design for Manufacture, Assembly, and Maintenance.

Very familiar with BS8888:2020.

Competent user of Microsoft Office.

Fluent in written and spoken English language.

Experience using CATIA V5 CAD software. Competent using the following workbenches.

Part Design

Assembly Design

Generative Shape Design

Sheet Metal Design



Familiar with SmarTeam PLM system or equivalent.

Familiar with 3D annotation (Model Based Definition)

10+ years' checking experience

Proficient in the use of CATIA V5

Familiar with coaching and mentoring

An understanding of design for vacuum, remote handling, cryogenics, and material selection for fusion applications is considered an advantage.
