Cost Engineer

Job Description

Do you have solid experience of fusion power plants integration and a strong interest in costs or are you an experienced cost engineer with strong technical background looking for a new challenge assuring that fusion power plants are designed with a strong cost conscience?

The UK Atomic Energy Authority have an excellent opportunity for a fusion cost integrator to join the STEP cost modelling team on our cutting-edge reactor design programme. With a clear objective to bring forward one of the world's first prototype fusion reactors on the paths to commercialisation, accurate cost integration and optimisation in the design is a vital strand of this industry-leading programme.

The STEP cost team is a significant cross-cutting function to the 7 technical design units that supports both the STEP conceptual design, the STEP commercial pathway as well as the planning for further programme tranches. This role will report to the STEP Cost Model Lead, who is responsible for facilitating the fusion cost integrators to have access, engagement, and interface across the technical design team. It sits along-side several equivalent fusion cost integrator roles each covering a specific area of the overall fusion reactor design. The Cost Model Lead will align the work of the different fusion cost integrators to assure consistency and completeness. The cost model area is ultimately accountable to the STEP Programme Manager - who works to the STEP Programme Director.

Accountabilities


The key responsibilities of fusion cost integrator are:

  • Lead the development of cost models relevant to the assigned product areas. Work closely with the respective technical leads to assure consistency with the product design as well as create awareness of the cost models relevant to their design unit.
  • Launch and manage external procurement related to the formation of those cost models
  • Form an integrated understanding on how the cost of an individual systems is affecting the overarching cost of the prototype and potential commercial successors
  • Influence the design of the individual technical units to lead to an integrated cost optimised reactor design and instil a cost conscience in the wider programme
  • Assure timeliness of the creation of the model in relation to the required decision time scales as well as determine an initial prioritization where resource limitation requires it
  • To act as main point of contact for cost assessment in the relevant product area and participate in relevant design review meetings as required
  • To quickly get a top-level understanding of the relevant subject matter of the partnered design units
  • Identify and protect intellectual property across all costing activities
  • Ensure robust and rigorous documentation of cost modelling and optimisation efforts using succinct, programme relevant and highly credible costing reports, ensuring all cost reports are passed through the costing due diligence process soliciting the review and approval of Subject Matter Experts
  • Coach graduate cost engineers in both cost engineering and fusion power plant integration

Essential Aptitudes and Experience


* Degree engineering/scientific discipline or significant experience of working in an engineering field
* Either strong knowledge of fusion power plant integration and interest in costs or strong cost engineering background in low TRL engineering environments with good technical understanding and interest in integrated fusion power plant design
* Effective and flexible verbal and written communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to quickly build a working knowledge of a new, complex subject matter
* Self-motivated and capable of working independently within a multi-disciplinary team
* Ability to influence product design leads, senior management and other stakeholders
* Ability to plan and manage costing modelling and optimisation activities to support commercially viable product options
* Ability to collaborate with widely range of stakeholder (R&D product development teams, UK universities, SMEs and suppliers to address gaps and inform critical costing activities)
* Resilience in a high paced working environment

Desirable Experience


* Membership of ACostE or completion of a recognised cost engineering/estimating course
* Familiarity with the fusion sector/ power sector as well as broad power plant technologies
* Understanding of integration challenges in fusion power plant
* Experience of working in a major programme environment
